REACH OUT - Empowering Teachers to Become Trauma-Sensitive Schools
The Reach Out project aims to improve teachers’ knowledge and skills to meet the psychosocial needs of students affected by natural disasters and increase their social cohesion.
As well as threatening the physical safety of individuals, natural disasters can leave deep psychological and emotional scars, particularly on children and young people. Effects such as trauma, anxiety, fear, uncertainty and loss of academic motivation can negatively affect both the individual development and educational processes of students. It is therefore vital that teachers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to support students in this process.
The project aims to empower teachers not only as educators, but also as guides who support the psychosocial well-being of their students. Accordingly, while raising teachers’ awareness of issues such as post-disaster crisis management and psychological first aid, support mechanisms are also put in place to increase their own psychological resilience. Teachers are encouraged to develop healthy coping strategies for their students and themselves.
